Sir, Is That Your Grenade On The Ground?
I visited a rest area in Virginia that had a notice on the front door stating, "No Guns. No Explosives." I get the "No Guns", everyone has a gun, but "No Explosives"? How often does this happen to warrant such a notice? Who's walking around with explosives?
"Honey, don't forget to leave your dynamite in the car."
"Dang, I left home with C-4 in my briefcase....again!"
Besides that, isn't it common sense? I can see someone carrying a gun with personal defense in-mind. Why would anyone just randomly carry explosives? And this sign is supposed to do what? Remind them it's a "no-no"? The white boarding session used to come up with this sign must have been interesting.
So, Bob, you're saying that if we remind the psychopaths walking around with explosives that they shouldn't bring them in to a rest area will appeal to their conscience and deter potential problems. Brilliant!
Say Cheese
I want to give Atlantic Dentistry in Kitty Hawk some positive recognition. I chipped my tooth Tuesday night while eating potato chips (good grief) and called them early Wednesday to try and get an appointment. They were able to squeeze me in at 10am and Dr. Marshall fixed it right then and there. I'm good as new but I look at every bag of potato chips with suspicion and contempt.
Yaupon Tea
I live on a street with a funny name because most people don't know what the word means or how to spell it. When we moved to this house a few years ago I figured it was some kind of tree or bush, but I didn't know its historical significance. While researching local history and Native Americans I found that this native plant was widely used on the Outer Banks.
I'm not a tea drinker (it's just brown water -Ted Lasso), but it's good to know that should our nation evolve in to a post-apocalyptic world I can still get my daily dose of caffeine by picking leaves off the bush at the end of my street (and I won't have to pay a tariff). That extra boost may come in handy as I fight off the zombies.
THINGS TO DO
Manteo Downtown Market, Saturdays
Head to Roanoke Island very Saturday this summer for the Downtown Manteo Market—a weekly gathering of local makers, bakers, growers, and artists in one of the most scenic spots in town: George Washington Creef Memorial Park.
Annual One-Design Regatta, 7/26/2025
The Annual One Design Regatta celebrates the sailing history of Manteo. It is held the last Saturday in July each year at the
Roanoke Island Maritime Museum and is open to Optimist, 420, Sunfish, and Topaz sailboats.
Although sailing is not a great spectator sport, just having an excuse to hang around the docks in Downtown Manteo is a good reason to go.
