New Show Proposal: The Housewives of Ancient Babylon
Below is an excerpt from a National Geographic digital article regarding ancient finds in Babylon.
In one text from the 18th century B.C., a man called Aham-nirši wants to dissolve his upcoming marriage. The text reads as follows: “In the presence of these witnesses, they questioned Aham-nirši: ‘Is this woman (still to be considered) your wife?’ He declared: ‘(You can) hang me on a peg, yea dismember me—I will not stay married (to her)!’ Thus he said. They questioned his wife and she answered: ‘I (still) love my husband.’ Thus she answered. He, however, refused. He knotted up her hem and cut it off.”
Talk about buyers remorse. "Dismember me"?! Read: I would rather die a long and painful death than be married to this woman. And the wife is like, "I think he's a catch." This could be an ancient version of The Jerry Springer Show. We're all just waiting for another woman to run in and start a fight with the wife.
Funny Headline: This Generation Grandparents Sucks
In short, people are selfish and it's a two-way street. Grandparents should be giving of their time and presence. New parents should not treat grandparents like free babysitters.
Karma is a B*****
Grounded boats on the Outer Banks are becoming an annual event. When I read this boat had run ashore I thought it would be great if someone could help him get back on his way. It wasn't a large boat but unfortunately it would take quite a bit of time and money to get there when the tide was perfect. To make things worse the boat owner didn't have much money. You'd think that would be the end of the story. But no. It seems he was wanted for crimes elsewhere and now he has a new place to sleep complements of our local judicial system.
Breezy!
High winds from the northeast are expected starting Friday night and going through Sunday. Winds in the mid-20s could create ocean over-wash Saturday and Sunday. If the ocean breeches the dunes of northern Hatteras Island this could become a giant headache for people coming and going to Hatteras Island this weekend.
THINGS TO DO
Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge
Something I don't do enough of is e-biking at the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. I was there last week and had a great time seeing bears. My fat-tire e-bike is perfect for the gravel roads in the refuge and we covered almost 20 miles. Be sure to bring a map and a camera.
Free Admission to Wright Brothers National Memorial, 8/4/25 and 8/19/25
The U.S. Parks Service offers free admission several times a year. August 4 and August 19 are the next, such days.
Go climb a lighthouse....at night.
Every Tuesday in the summer and during full moons you can climb the Bodie Island Lighthouse at night. Pre-purchase of tickets required.
Restaurant of the Week
Miller's Waterfront Restaurant
Having worked next door to Miller's for 15 years I've had plenty of their food. Ironically, I've never sat in their dining room to eat. Wednesday was similar in that I had a late lunch upstairs in the Waterfront Sunset Bar and Grill. The upstairs bar area overlooks the Roanoke Sound and has garage door windows they open in warm weather. It's a great place for casual dining and water views. The upstairs serves a limited menu but the choices are great. I highly recommend the Tuna Tostada ($17.00). Blackened Ahi Tuna over a crispy tortilla, with lettuce, tomato, cheese, black beans, pico, & cilantro cream. More, please.
