Bye, Summer

Saturday is the last day of summer.  Before you pack your swimsuit for a winter's nap be sure to jump in the water, get a sunburn, track sand in to your house, use the outdoor shower, grill outside, and enjoy a beer while watching the sun set.  You'll thank me in a few months.

A random (and true) story about my "idyllic" childhood.

My first childhood home was a slice of middle-class suburban life just outside the D.C. beltway.  To this day I'm still friends with my neighbors from two doors down.  It was a classic upbringing in the 1970s with kids playing outside in...

This Can't Be Good For Tourism

Do we really need another predator in the ocean to make our lives miserable? Luckily, we haven't seen these on the Outer Banks. Yet.

True Story:

In Plymouth, North Carolina there's a funeral home called Toodles. I'm disappointed they're not leaning in to this. The advertising potential could be unlimited.

HEADLINE: Italy Endures Blue Crab Invasion

A blue crab invasion has upended Italy’s culinary traditions and ecology.  The blue crabs crossed the Atlantic as stowaways, and with no natural predators they’re overtaking Italy’s marine ecosystem.

I have a solution for this. Send a bunch of Maryla...

My new, favorite show: World Dog Surfing

I stumbled upon this on a rainy, Saturday afternoon and I had to ask, "Where have you been my whole life?"  I could watch this for hours.  One competitor's owner started her own dog surfing school in Japan!  We need one of these on the OBX!

Another Woman

About 2 years ago my wife decided to stop dyeing her hair and let the grey grow out.  As always, she looks amazing. Several weeks ago she and I went to a party and saw an old acquaintance.  We said "hi", exchanged some brief pleasantries, and kept moving. Fast forward to last weekend ...

Kitty Hawk Wildlife

A few days ago I stepped outside of the Harris Teeter in Kitty Hawk and I spotted a bald eagle flying directly above me. He landed on a nearby tree and that is the photo at the top of the page. As I was admiring the bird a man walked by and I brought it to his attention. Like me...

Self-Control

The self-control I see among visitors on the Outer Banks is amazing. For example, last Sunday I saw a young lady and her son walking away from Duck Donuts at the Outer Banks Mall. They were at least a quarter mile away! The donuts were probably still warm! How is this possible?! Under ...

What's The Deal With Rental Cars?

I was almost happy to read that I'm not the only person to get the run-around from rental agencies.

https://wapo.st/4cDNPBB

It reminds me of the Seinfeld episode when the rental company does the same thing with Jerry's reservation. Over 30 years and nothing has c...
